Akiu Onsen history dates back to the Old Tomb Period (531 A.D.- 570 A.D.), it is well known that the 29th Emperor, Kinmei took baths to cure his skin disease. That was when Akiu Onsen was called "Natori-no-Miyu" Since then, it has been listed as one of the imperial hot springs, along with Bessho Onsen (Shinano-Miyu) and Nozawa Onsen (Inukai-Miyu), making them “Japan’s top three hot springs”.
"Natori-no-Miyu" is found in Shui Wakashu (A selection of Japanese Poetry), Yamato Monogatari (Tales of Yamato). Sendai’s founder, Masamune Date, loved Akiu Onsen. Akiu Onsen was treated well and protected for generations.

Onsen Types and Therapeutic Effects of Aiku Onsen

Chloride Spring
This type of Onsen includes salt like seawater. Salt on the skin surface retains the body temperature. It’s recommended to seniors and sick people in recovery.
Therapeutic Effects include: Joint pain, sprains, poor circulation, chronic female disorders, etc.
Simple Hot Spring
This type of hot spring is clear, colorless, and has no smell. It does not contain enough minerals to meet the criteria for a specific hot spring type, yet hot spring temperature is 25 degree Celsius or above. It has little stimulus to the skin and has various benefits for health. This type of hot spring is usually thought of as a “notable hot spring”.
Therapeutic Effects include: Fatigue, neuralgia, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, etc.
Sulphate Spring
This type of hot spring can be classified roughly into three types; Calcium sulphate, Sodium sulphate and Magnesium sulphate.
Therapeutic Effects include: Calcium sulphate (Rheumatism, cuts, burns, etc), Sodium sulphate (Hypertension, arteriosclerosis, wounds, etc.), Magnesium sulphate (Rheumatism, cuts, burns, Hypertension, arteriosclerosis, wounds, etc.).
